Integrated Undergrad-Grad Program

The IUG program combines a Penn State baccalaureate degree with a master’s degree in a continuous program of study, allowing you to earn both credentials in approximately five years.

This accelerated pathway is an ideal choice if you are undergraduate student who can confidently make an early commitment to your chosen field of interest.

You can earn both an undergraduate and graduate degree in less time and with considerably less investment when compared to earning each degree separately. Due to the continuous nature of the program, Penn State allows you to count certain credits toward the degree requirements for both the graduate and undergraduate degrees.

Penn State offers an integrated B.A./B.S. in Criminology and MPS in Criminal Justice Policy and Administration (CPJA) program to high-achieving undergraduate students currently enrolled in the on-campus criminology degree program at University Park.

If accepted into the program, you will begin your graduate course work during your fourth year by taking 9 credits of CPJA electives online through Penn State World Campus. Please note that these three courses will count toward both your bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Beginning in year five, you have the flexibility to complete the remaining seven courses online through Penn State World Campus.

Depending on course availability, you can pick any three courses below to count toward both degrees:

  • CRIM 430: American Correctional System
  • CRIM 432: Crime and the American Court System
  • CRIM 433: Sentencing
  • CRIM 467: Law and Society
  • CJPA 501: Criminal Justice Institutions
  • CJPA 502: Theories of Crime
  • CJPA 803: Applied Research Methods
  • CJPA 820: Criminal Procedure
  • CJPA 865: Criminal Justice Ethics in a Diverse Society
  • CRIMJ 503: Advanced Statistics in Criminal Justice

As a student in the online MPS in Criminal Justice Policy and Administration (CJPA) program, you can gain sound, in-depth knowledge of the criminal justice system and criminal behavior, coupled with an understanding of the research methods necessary to evaluate criminal justice policies and practices at the local, state, and national levels. This respected credential can help you stand out among your peers in a field where educated professionals are in demand.

You should plan to apply during the semester in which you will complete 60 credits. For most students, this is during the second semester of their second (or sophomore) year.

You will need to apply and be accepted to both the Graduate School and IUG program.

Student applicants should generally have a minimum overall GPA of 3.2 and show positive progress in their major with success in statistics, data analysis, and research methods. Application requirements include:

  • a letter grade of B+ or higher in CRIM 249 and CRIM 250W
  • recommendations from two faculty members
  • a two-page statement of purpose explaining why you want to participate in the program and why you are qualified to do so
  • payment of a non-refundable application fee

No indication will be made on your diploma (or transcript) that your graduate degree was completed online. Your diploma will state that you graduated from Penn State.

No worries! If you were accepted into the IUG program and are unable to complete the MPS degree, you are still eligible to receive your bachelor’s degree if all other undergraduate degree requirements have been satisfied.
