Tips to Make Your Transfer Journey Successful
Penn State World Campus is recognizing National Transfer Student Week from October 20 to 24. It’s a chance for us to celebrate the diverse group of students who have transferred to World Campus to further their education. If you have recently transferred to World Campus or are considering doing so, Bethany Wagner, transfer credit specialist at World Campus, shares tips to help make the transfer credit process easier and set you up for success on your academic journey.
Know Your Transfer Credits Before You Transfer
Be sure to review what you’ve already completed and compare it with Penn State’s transfer policies before enrolling. This will help you understand which courses may be eligible for transfer and how they’ll apply to your degree.
Disclose All Transcripts
Ensure that every transcript from any previously attempted course is submitted and up-to-date. Double-checking this helps guarantee that all your credits are accurately evaluated.
Meet with a Transfer Credit Specialist and Stay Connected
World Campus has a team of dedicated transfer credit specialists that manages the evaluation process. Building a relationship with them can be incredibly helpful in understanding how your credits will transfer and ensuring a smooth transition. Even if you don’t have any specific questions, they are a great resource to have!
Meet with Your Adviser Early and Often
Your academic adviser is your best resource for planning your academic path, exploring possible course substitutions, and ensuring you stay on track without losing valuable credits.
Pay Attention to Prerequisites
Stay proactive about completing prerequisite courses on time, as they often unlock access to required classes and help you maintain steady progress toward your degree.
Understand General Education (Gen Ed) Requirements
Some of your previous courses may count toward both major and general education requirements, but not all will. Make sure you know which Gen Eds you would still need so you can plan your schedule strategically.
Join Transfer-Specific Programs
Many campuses offer transfer student organizations, mentoring programs, or orientation events designed to help you connect with peers who’ve successfully navigated the transition. These connections can make your experience smoother and more supportive. At World Campus, you can make connections by joining any of the many student organizations and get support through the Peer Guide program or Alumni Connections.
Ask About Resources
From tutoring and writing help to career services, World Campus has numerous resources and support systems in place; take advantage of them.
Attend Orientation Events
Even if they are optional, orientation sessions and other events geared toward new students are a great way to get insider information, learn campus resources, and start building connections with fellow students right away.
Know Your Financial Aid Timeline
Make sure your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), scholarships, and Penn State aid are lined up by the deadline each year. Ask about transfer scholarships: some colleges within Penn State offer specific scholarships that pertain to your situation, and World Campus also has its own scholarship opportunities. You won’t know unless you ask.
Transferring to a new school is an exciting step toward achieving your academic goals, even if it comes with challenges along the way. By staying organized, asking questions, and taking advantage of the resources available, you can make your transition smoother and set yourself up for success.
Most importantly, be flexible! Policies, procedures, and degree requirements may differ from your previous institution. Keeping an open and adaptable mindset will help you adjust smoothly and make the most of your new academic environment. Embrace the opportunities, connect with your advisers and peers, and remember that each step forward brings you closer to your degree and future aspirations.
