Taking Exams and Securing a Proctor

The Proctor's Role

Penn State requires written proctor verification to ensure academic integrity and maintain accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Your proctor is responsible for maintaining the academic integrity of the exam process on behalf of Penn State.

If the proctor believes that the academic integrity of the exam process has been compromised, he or she has the right to stop the exam. Whether or not the exam is stopped, the proctor will report the incident to the World Campus and will share the information with your course instructor, who will decide on the appropriate action, consistent with the University's policy on academic integrity.

What You Need to Know before You Find a Proctor

  • Your proctor must be approved before any exams can be taken.
  • While many proctors will serve on a voluntary basis, you are responsible for paying any expenses incurred in retaining a proctor.
  • For new proctors, you must complete a Proctor Information Form and submit it with the proctor verification documentation.
  • You will need to complete a Request for Examination for each exam. Specific instructions are located in your course information in ANGEL.
  • Contact the World Campus if you cannot take a scheduled exam.
  • If you have not taken your exam on the scheduled date, your proctor is required to contact the World Campus.

Print and Online Proctoring

Exams can be either paper-based or online, depending on the course. If your course requires a proctor for your exams, you will be required to obtain a qualified proctor to administer them. (A proctor will not be assigned to you.) Penn State requires written proctor verification from all proctors prior to examinations, so be sure to plan for this accordingly.

To find out how your course's exams will be proctored, you can review your course syllabus in ANGEL.
