Why Seek Career Counseling?

Career counselors are professionals who assist people with career and personal development concerns. They can help you develop a meaningful career path by empowering you with the tools and resources you need to make educated decisions about your career, or help you consider what personal issues may influence your career.

A career counselor can help you:

  • identify your interests and abilities
  • make work/life decisions
  • take a career assessment
  • become familiar with different majors
  • gather information on the jobs that people do
  • create a plan to market yourself
  • cope with co-workers, unemployment, or re-entering the job market
  • develop interviewing skills
  • manage emotions related to choosing a career

What Can I Expect from Career Counseling?

Together with your career counselor, you will develop a personalized career plan to help you reach your professional goals. You will receive support and assistance throughout your career decision-making process. A career counselor will try to help you wherever you are in the process, whether learning about yourself, understanding what people do in their jobs, or learning how to negotiate salary offers.

When possible, your career counselor will offer you feedback about yourself and your career decision-making process, and provide you with insight into the nature of majors or career paths when such information is available. Your career counselor, however, cannot tell you what to do or make decisions for you. He or she may not be able to inform you of all possible occupations associated with majors or educate you on all details of different careers.

Empowerment for Success

Career counselors are here to help you learn about the process of career planning and point you toward resources to empower you to make educated decisions about your career, or help you consider what personal issues will influence your career. Ultimately, it is up to you to engage in further research and assume the responsibility for making your own career choices.
