Graduate students studying at any of Penn State’s campuses have access to peer writing support through the Graduate Writing Center, which is a service coordinated by graduate students in Penn State’s Department of English. The center is sponsored by The Graduate School and Penn State’s Department of English.
Please note: The Graduate Writing Center posts its available tutoring slots on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time for the following week.
How Can the Graduate Writing Center Help Me?
You and a trained peer consultant from the center will review your writing via Skype and Google Docs or email. This process will generate productive feedback, improve student writing, and facilitate critical thinking.
The Graduate Writing Center also offers workshop materials for writing a thesis, dissertation, personal statements, as well as best practices for writing.
What Can I Expect from a Session?
This workshop is a friendly peer consulting group that aims to assist all Penn State graduate students in any part of the writing process — no matter what discipline you’re studying. During your session, you can discuss writing structure, logic and flow, appropriateness of your argument, and formatting, among other things.
How Do I Prepare and Sign Up for a Session?
- Send your work to your consultant before your session starts. Some students use Google Docs, which allows you to make edits and changes in real time, but you may also email your documents to the Graduate Writing Center.
- Download Skype on your computer before your session starts. To start your scheduled session, you can initiate a Skype call to the Graduate Writing Center’s username, which is available on their website.
- You can sign up for 50-minute appointments by visiting the Graduate Writing Center site.
